This book has a high rating and a long hold line in any online libraries in MA. Hence, I decided to check it out.
However, I can tell you for sure that it wasn't a very pleasant listening experience. There were times that I thought about putting down this audio book. But I powered through eventually. (It caused the decline of book summaries this March.)
There were times that Nikil Saval mention Taylorism. It was the first time I heard about this theory but I believe you won't be unfamiliar with it. It simply refers to an approach that a manager use to time their subordinates/clerks. In the manufacturing/assembling factory, this may make some senses.
Nonetheless, it doesn't make sense at all when it comes to customer facing work or thinking/engineering work. McDonald times their employees on how much time they spend to get the order from a customer. So their speeches are commonly delivered at the speed of rappers. There were times that a customer service staff would be limited on the time of a phone call they can make. If they can't finish, they have to dial back after hanging up.
Unfortunately, I have seen this Taylorism first hand. An assembly line manager was promoted to be a plant manager. Because of their previous experience, they decided to run the office like an assembly line. NO CONVERSATION. No matter you need to discuss a schematic layout or a control design, you shouldn't talk. But when they're in their own shoes, the story changes. Even if everyone knows their son went to Aerospace Engineering school or their daughter enrolled French course in their university, it's okay.
