After listening to all the audiobooks I could find about Hatshepsut, I ran into this book about Cleopatra. I was at the peak of my desire to learn more about Egypt (though ancient Egypt has nothing to do with modern Egypt). Hence, I checked out this title without hesitation.
In the middle of listening, I was discussing this book with my family. By then, I realized that Cleopatra is the famous "埃及豔后" in Mandarin! What a surprise! And after I completed this book, I found that the Hellenistic period means "希臘化時代," a term that showed up in my high school history textbook.
Besides, I was in shock to hear that Cleopatra could speak nine languages and that the Illiad and Odyssey written by Homer were the learning material in her education.
Her life story with Ceasar and Marc Anthony is so dramatic beyond my imagination. Unfortunately, many Romans hated Cleopatra because they believed that she seduced Ceasar. Even Cicero said so. Nonetheless, when love grows after a series of tingles, the chemistry will be more complicated than your Organic Chemistry.
By the way, Cleopatra is Greek, neither Arabic nor African. The debate about casting Gal Gadot as Cleopatra results from here. Besides, the vocabulary used in this audiobook is more advanced, so it may be challenging for some listeners (such as myself).
