The founder of Cliff Bar, Gary Erickson, started his business after an under-planned biking trip with his homies. Because he found all the energy bars available on the market not enjoyable, he decided to make his own. (Personally, I still think it doesn't taste good though.) Of course, it wasn't an immediate success.
Shoe Dog, the founder of Nike, Phil Knight, failed several times in his career, including over-speed business expansion suggested by a flock of bankers though he never thought of it that way. The book summary is available at [BOOK SUMMARY] SHOE DOG—PHIL KNIGHT.
But there is one key point that we should keep in mind. The great idea/opportunity won't hit you while you are doing nothing (at least for most of the time). You need to expose yourself so that the opportunity can smash into your face! (Sounds a bit brutal. Haha.)
