If you are so desperate to win, a few lies can help you seize the flashing chance. At least in Phil Knight's case.
Lied about having a company named Blue Ribbon and having an East Coast office and had a spy in a Japanese company, Phil did whatever he could to win. He may not stand firm on the moral ground yet who knows Onitsuka nowadays? It's Business.
Besides, he was so blessed that he picked Nike as his brand name rather than Dimension Six. The crispier, the more memorable. Plus, together, we go far. He had a good team.
Sometimes you need to look at the big picture, right? If Phil didn't settle with the nine million blackmail (American selling price), Nike would have died in the 70s. Unfortunately, no matter how rich you are, power can often bring you down to your knees.
Lastly, Phil said that "In the end, it's only quality that counts." Apparently, whoever runs the giant focus on revenue now.
