[Book Summary] Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: The Classic Guide to Understanding the Opposite Sex—John Gray
Because of an extraordinary girl, I started learning more about women. Something I had stopped a long time ago.
There are some key takeaways from this book and I summarize them into sections below.
- Men go into their caves when upset or having problems to resolve. On Mars, seeking for help is a sign of weakness so they lock themselves in their caves to figure it out.
Women are from Venus. They talk to bond, share, heal, and show they care. This can cause a conflict when the two persons can't understand what is happening.
The man doesn't want to talk but the woman insists on talking it through. At this moment, tell her the four magic words "I will be back." before heading into your cave. So that she doesn't have to wait and be nervous about you. - Sometimes women need to hit the emotional well before it bounces back. To be a good partner, you simply keep your mouth shut and listen. Even if she falls into the well faster, you shouldn't interrupt. The faster it goes down, the earlier it may come up. Have faith in the wonderful beings from Venus.
- Six things that women care about the most and men should take notes: caring, understanding, respect, devotion, validation, and reassurance.
- 90/10 principle. When two persons are in a great relationship, no matter how supportive the love is, they may feel anger, distrust, fear, sadness, or sorrow. It can lead to a fight or flight.
It is simply because we tend to open up more when we are in a trusting relationship. And the unresolved emotional wounds will surface again from the dungeon with a dragon. The past contributes 90% of the reaction while the current event only contributes 10%.
Even though this is the case, it's still a good time to face and heal the wound. Both persons can learn how to write a love letter and a response letter by reading this book.
