[Book Summary] HBR's 10 Must Reads: On Women and Leadership

Rating: ★★★

There are two articles that drew my attention.

First, the double bonding posted on females in the workforce. On the one hand, females face traditional expectations, including gentle, caring, and sacrificing. On the other hand, leaders/managers are expected to be decisive, risk-taking, and outgoing. These two expectations form a bonding that traps females from advancing in their careers.

However, we all know changing the world is so difficult (It doesn't mean we should give up on pushing gender equality in all walks of life.). The fastest way is probably ignoring others' opinions. Like a book quite popular suggests, we should learn The Subtle Art of Not Giving A FXXK!

Second, the backfire caused by the most common gender equality program. If you work in the US, you should be familiar with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness (DEI). Gender equality is one part of it. Many companies hire external firms on providing DEI training. However, the negative and aggressive terms in training material can make things worse.

A more probable approach would be using Cognitive Dissonance. Let your employees take part in activities caring about females and minorities as a first step. Then changing identities to prevent cognitive dissonance can be foreseen down the road. It's a common method mentioned in The 2-Hour Job Search by Steve Dalton and Atomic Habits by James Clear.
