[Book Summary] Great World Religions: Islam—Professor John L Esposito

Rating: ★

"Great World Religions: Islam" by Professor John L. Esposito provides an insightful exploration into the Islamic faith, covering key aspects, beliefs, and practices. In a time of war between Hamas and Israel, it's critical that we learn more about others instead of being manipulated by media.

If you can understand Mandarin/Chinese, feel free to check out this course. Of course, the range and topics it covers is different from the courses by Prof. John L Esposito.

Here's a summary focusing on the Five Pillars of Islam and the discussion around fundamentalism and extremism:

Overview:

The course delves into the rich tapestry of Islam, unraveling its historical, cultural, and spiritual dimensions. Professor John L. Esposito provides a balanced and comprehensive view of the religion, aiming to reduce misconceptions and promote understanding.

Five Pillars of Islam:

1. Shahada (Declaration of Faith):

The first pillar involves bearing witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger. This simple yet profound declaration is the cornerstone of Islamic belief.

2. Salah (Prayer):

Muslims are required to perform five daily prayers facing the Kaaba in Mecca. These prayers serve as a direct connection between the believer and Allah, fostering spiritual discipline and mindfulness.

This in my hindsight is a great practice. You can use this time to count your blessings if you're struggling. Isn't it?

3. Zakat (Charity):

The third pillar is Zakat, which emphasizes the importance of charity. Muslims are required to give a portion (2.5%) of their wealth (not their annual income) to those in need, fostering social justice and community support.

If people believe in capitalism can adjust themselves a little bit and adapt this practice, the gap between the mega rich and the people at the bottom won't keep growing like a tumor.

4. Sawm (Fasting during Ramadan):

Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn to sunset, promoting self-discipline, empathy for the less fortunate, and spiritual reflection.

As you may know/practice, the common 168 fasting benefits us, too.

5. Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca):

The fifth pillar is Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, which is obligatory for Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake it. The Hajj is a profound journey of spiritual renewal, unity, and equality before Allah.

Besides, let's spend some time to discuss a common misconception that links Muslims with terrorists. Professor Esposito addresses the nuanced topics of fundamentalism and extremism within Islam:

1. Fundamentalism:

Fundamentalism in Islam, as in other religions, involves a strict adherence to fundamental or traditional beliefs. In the Islamic context, it often refers to a conservative interpretation of the Quran and Hadith. While many Muslims hold traditional views, not all are extremists.

2. Extremism:

Extremism is an ideological position characterized by a departure from mainstream beliefs. In Islam, extremists might interpret religious teachings in an extreme and often violent manner. It's crucial to note that the actions of a few extremists do not represent the beliefs of the entire Muslim community.

Professor Esposito likely emphasizes that the vast majority of Muslims worldwide practice their faith peacefully, and discussions around extremism require a nuanced understanding that considers geopolitical factors, cultural contexts, and diverse interpretations of religious texts.

The course provides a valuable opportunity for learners to gain a deeper appreciation of Islam, fostering interfaith dialogue and promoting a more inclusive understanding of this major world religion.

Lastly, Professor Esposito mentioned that Muhammad was said to have said: "the best of you is he who is best to his wife." You may wonder how this concept doesn't resemble the picture in your mind. Well, who controls the interpretation of Quran in a patriarchal society?
